What is a Walk & Sketch?

A "Walk & Sketch" is a creative activity that combines the joys of walking and the art of sketching. It involves exploring the world around you, immersing yourself in the sights, sounds, and textures of your surroundings, while capturing your observations through sketching.

As you walk, you will be encouraged to be fully present, taking in the details of your environment. You will observe the contours of trees, the play of light and shadows, the movements of people and animals, and the intricate patterns in nature. Each step unveils new possibilities for your sketches.

"Walk & Sketch" is not only about the final product but also about the process itself. It encourages you to slow down, observe, and truly connect with your surroundings. It's a way to immerse yourself in the moment, letting your creative instincts guide your hand as you translate the world onto paper.

This activity offers a range of benefits. It nurtures your artistic skills, helping you improve your ability to observe and interpret the world visually. It also cultivates mindfulness and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the world around us. "Walk & Sketch" allows you to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, providing a serene and meditative space where you can find inspiration and rejuvenation.

Whether you are an experienced artist or a beginner exploring your artistic side, a "Walk & Sketch" is a wonderful way to combine the joy of walking, the tranquility of sketching, and the wonder of discovery. So, grab your sketchbook, put on your walking shoes, and set off on a delightful journey of creativity and exploration.

Equipment

You will need a weather appropriate clothing and walking shoes (trainers will also do). You will need a sketchbook and favorite drawing tool (whatever you feel comfortable with). Suggested: pencil, biro and/or sharpie. If your sketchbook does not come with a hard cover you may also want something to lean on such as a book or a drawing board. You may also want a camera.

If you have difficulty with standing you may wish to bring something to sit on e.g. a fishing stool (I myself use a portable telescopic stool).

The Route

We will being going from the entrance to Little Joy Meadows (along Bayswater Road) towards Sydlings Copse. Sydlings Copse is a secluded nature reserve in the Oxford countryside where you can find lots of wildlife. Click here to view the rendevous point on Google Maps.

The walk itself takes aproximately an hour (half an hour there and half and hour back), but we will be taking breaks along the way to enjoy the environment and to sketch. We will not be rushing so it may take a little longer than the 2 hours scheduled (we call this Bonus Time)! We will be sticking to the paths, but there is a stile to get over.

You will be emailed prior to the event with directions

What to expect

The "Walk and Sketch" will be lead by proffessional Artist-Teacher Amy Letts. They will guide you along the route and stop at intervals to sketch. They will help you with sketching advice and tips, but also encourage you to be fully present, engage with all your senses, notice things in the enviroment and appreciate the experience. The aim is to connect more with nature using art.
